What Síomha means

Síomha means peace, or peaceful one, generally taken from the Irish síth, peace, with a second element read as good. The word síth also means a fairy mound, and the two senses are related in Irish thought.

Where Síomha comes from

Síomha is a modern Irish spelling of the older Síthmhaith, from síth, peace, and maith, good — giving good peace. The síth element is the same one behind the sídhe, the fairy folk, whose name comes from the mounds they were said to inhabit; peace and the otherworld are connected in Irish through the idea of a place apart from ordinary strife. The medieval Síthmhaith appears in the annals as an abbess of Clonbroney. The modern spelling is a twentieth-century simplification made for registration, and it is barely older than the 1980s in general use. Síomha has no anglicization at all, which is unusual even among Irish names and is a large part of why it has stayed within the Republic.

The bar shows how near the top of each country's list the name sits, on a scale where #1 fills the row and #1,000 is a sliver. The figures beside it are the real rank and the babies recorded that year.

Irish figures withhold any name given to fewer than three babies in a year, so a gap means the name fell below that floor rather than went unused. The Central Statistics Office began recording the síneadh fada in 2018, so accented and unaccented spellings are counted separately from that year on. Data & sources.
