What Lorcan means

Lorcan means little fierce one, or little cruel one. The root lorc is a strong word — fierce, cruel, savage — and the diminutive softens it into something closer to young fierce one than to anything mild.

Where Lorcan comes from

Lorcan anglicizes the Irish Lorcán, from lorc, fierce or cruel, with the diminutive -án. Lorcán mac Lachtnai was a tenth-century king of Thomond and the great-grandfather of Brian Boru, which puts the name at the root of the O'Brien line. Its saint is Lorcán Ua Tuathail, known in English as Laurence O'Toole, who became archbishop of Dublin in 1162 and was in office when Strongbow's Normans took the city in 1170; he negotiated between the Irish kings and the invaders, died at Eu in Normandy in 1180 and was canonized in 1225. He is the patron saint of Dublin. The English form Laurence attached to him by sound rather than sense — Laurence is Latin, from Laurentum — and the pairing is one of many where an Irish name acquired an unrelated English partner during the centuries when Irish names were not registrable.

Lorcan in use

Our records carry it only from 1997, which makes it one of the later arrivals in the Irish-language revival rather than one of its first names.

The bar shows how near the top of each country's list the name sits, on a scale where #1 fills the row and #1,000 is a sliver. The figures beside it are the real rank and the babies recorded that year.

Irish figures withhold any name given to fewer than three babies in a year, so a gap means the name fell below that floor rather than went unused. The Central Statistics Office began recording the síneadh fada in 2018, so accented and unaccented spellings are counted separately from that year on. Data & sources.
