Russian Names

Russian names are mostly Greek by way of Orthodox Christianity, reshaped by Slavic sound patterns. The diminutive system is unusually elaborate — one name can have a dozen forms carrying different degrees of affection — and English speakers often adopt one of those forms without the formal name behind it.
