Hebrew Names

Hebrew names are built from three-consonant roots, and a great many are small sentences rather than words: God has heard, God has given, who is like God. Almost all of them reached English through Greek and Latin translations of the Bible, which is why the English forms are so far from the Hebrew ones — Jacob and James are the same name, separated only by which route they took.
