What Tiernan means

Tiernan means little lord, or lordly one, from the Irish tighearna, a lord or master, with a diminutive ending. The word is the ordinary one for a lord and also serves for the Lord in religious use.

Where Tiernan comes from

Tiernan anglicizes the Irish Tighearnán, from tighearna, a lord, with the diminutive -án. Its bearer is Tighearnán Ua Ruairc, king of Bréifne in the twelfth century, whose wife Derbforgaill left with — or was abducted by — Diarmait Mac Murchada, king of Leinster, in 1152. Tighearnán's pursuit of that grievance eventually drove Diarmait out of Ireland, and Diarmait went to Henry II for help, which brought the Normans in 1169. The chain from a marital dispute to eight centuries of English involvement is the version Irish schoolchildren learn, and it flattens a great deal, but Tighearnán is genuinely at the start of it. The surname McTiernan and the place name Ballytiernan come from the same source.
